Khayelitsha FM have come out in support of the fire victims affected by the recent shack fire in Site C informal settlement.

Since the incident occurred on Saturday 15 July, activists and organisations had dedicated their time giving support to the victims.

On Wednesday 19 July Khayelitsha FM visited Site C and donated clothes, food parcels and blankets to the shack fire victims.

Khayelitsha FM was established to empower and develop the community of Khayelitsha and the surrounding communities.

The station’s founder and CEO King Ngavu said they were touched by the incident.

“Many people were left with nothing after the inferno. As a community radio station instead of folding our arms we decided to joined hands with the City of Cape Town in an effort to assist them. We provided them with clothes, blankets and food parcels,” said Ngavu.

He described the situation at Site C in Khayelitsha as appalling as there are people who now do not have shelters to stay in.

Khayelitsha FM Community Development Manager Monica Maseko said the Khayelitsha FM Mobile Soup Kitchen is serving warm meals to Khayelitsha community members affected by the devastating fire.

She said the essential food parcels containing sugar, coffee, rice, pasta, maize meal and other non-perishables will also be distributed to displaced families.

“Khayelitsha FM will always avail its resources to assist disaster-stricken communities. We remain in close contact with the relevant organisations assisting with relief efforts in Khayelitsha and will assist for as long as necessary,” said Monica Maseko.

One of the shack fire victims Pinky Godlo  thanked all people and organisations that are supporting the victims during this difficult time.

“I’ve lost everything in the shack fire but with the help of Khayelitsha FM and other organisations I have clothes and food,” she said adding that she is currently staying with her boyfriend.

Ward councillor Fezile Muwa, said he could not express enough gratitude for what Khayelitsha FM was doing to assist the fire victims and for the relationship he was able to nurture with them as they help the community.

For any kind of assistance or donation, please contact King Ngavu on 0691924497 or email to: King@khayelitshafm.org

It is only the beginning of Lilitha's dreams coming true. Hopping into an interview with Lilitha, he starts off by saying how great the past few months have been. He has just finished producing the 1pm news bulletin and was about to start with the 7pm news bulletin, which he anchors on SABC. This has been his life since the first of April when he entered the Johannesburg SABC offices for the first time and not as a fan, but an employee of the national broadcaster. About four months prior to this day, Lilitha Ntsundwani recorded a video of himself outside the buildings, merely saying that one cannot enter the premises if they are not an official but in a news reader tone.
